Bowling score
calculator.

Tap how many pins you knocked down and it keeps score exactly like the overhead does — strikes worth your next two balls, spares worth your next one, and a tenth frame that hands you a bonus ball when you earn it.

Frame 1 · first ball

Total 0

X Strike

All ten down on the first ball. Worth 10 plus your next two balls, so a good strike can be worth up to 30.

/ Spare

All ten down using both balls. Worth 10 plus your next one ball — which is why a strike right after a spare feels so good.

Open frame

Pins left standing after both balls. You simply score what you knocked down, and no bonus carries forward.

10 Tenth frame

Strike or spare here and you get a bonus ball — three in total. It scores as a plain sum, which is how a perfect game reaches exactly 300.

Common questions

How bowling
actually works.

The stuff everybody quietly wonders about, answered without the jargon.

How does bowling scoring work?

A game is ten frames, and in each frame you get two balls to knock down ten pins. Clear all ten on the first ball and it's a strike, worth 10 plus your next two balls. Clear them using both balls and it's a spare, worth 10 plus your next one ball. Leave something standing and you just score the pins you knocked down. That carry-forward bonus is the whole reason scoring feels confusing at first — and why the calculator above exists.

What is a turkey in bowling?

Three strikes in a row. The name goes back to prize turkeys handed out at tournaments around the holidays over a century ago. Four in a row gets called a hambone, and beyond that most people just count them out loud.

What's the highest score possible in bowling?

300 — a perfect game. That's twelve strikes in a row: one in each of the first nine frames, then three more in the tenth. Roll it into the calculator above if you want to watch the maths work.

Why does the tenth frame get three balls?

Because a strike or spare is worth your next balls, and in the tenth frame there aren't any. So the tenth hands you the bonus balls directly: strike and you get two more, spare and you get one more. The tenth frame scores as a plain total, with no further bonus.

What is a 7–10 split?

The two back corner pins left standing with everything between them gone — the most famous shot in bowling, mostly because it's very nearly impossible. The only realistic method is clipping one pin thin enough to slide it flat across the deck into the other. Converting one is a story you get to tell for years.

Do I need my own ball and shoes to join a league?

No. House balls are free and shoes rent for a few dollars at the counter. Plenty of league bowlers start on house equipment and pick up their own gear later — or never. Turning up matters more than owning anything.
